A program within the Department of Corrections' Reentry Division, Correctional Industries (CI) operates job training programs for incarcerated individuals. The role of supervisor and mentor go hand in hand at CI. In the supervisor role, staff direct work on the production floor, set performance expectations, provide feedback and hold workers accountable. Taking supervision to the next level involves providing support to help the workers develop and learn. As mentors, CI staff are not only teaching workers specific technical skills that will enhance their employability, they are also acting as role models to help them learn or enhance professional behaviors. Professional rapport and supportive engagement between staff and workers creates a work environment focused on fostering and encouraging positive change.

Classroom training is an important part of the CI work experience. In addition to supervising and mentoring workers, many CI staff are also trained instructors. CI instructors hold various positions within CI, from supervisor assistant to industries manager. Certification is voluntary and can include both training for trainers in specific classroom courses such as, cognitive behavior training or ServSafe® food handlers training. Instructors and workforce development specialists work hand-in-hand to ensure workers receive necessary training while maintaining daily production schedules. Through our dedicated network of strong instructors, CI is able to provide a comprehensive work experience to our workers.
