Correctional Industries is pleased to offer ServSafe® Food Manager Certification to CI workers at Washington Corrections Center!

ServSafe® is an industry recognized food safety certification from the National Restaurant Association and is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)—Conference for Food Protection (CFP). Students learn to implement and follow essential food safety practices and create a culture of food safety in the organizations in which they work.

CI's Assistant Food Service Administrator commented, "It is gratifying to see CI WCC Food Services staff, in an already busy workplace, are selflessly giving of their time to deliver ServSafe® training to our workers. It takes a whole team, to not only to administer the program, but to also be able to cover those duties the trainers would normally be doing. Thank you."

Students learn the material and bring what they learned back to food services and immediately put that information to use.

WCC ServSafe® instructors began their first class on March 9, 2016 with 7 students with 6 students successfully completing and graduating. The course is a combination of classroom lectures, video lectures, and discussion. One of the CI instructors stated, "The students were engaged and showed a real interest in learning the material. One of the most satisfying moments was to see the students learn the material, bring what they learned back to food services and immediately put that information to use. Most of all, they will be able to take this home and use it when they get employment on the streets , no matter what the next step in their life will be."

CI workers enrolled in the class expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity earn the ServSafe® certification and made the following comments: "Although it is true that the ServSafe® certification will benefit me in my search for employment, the real reward has been the wealth of information presented in this class. As a lead in the CI Kitchen Production Room, I find more and more ways to incorporate the knowledge. I enjoy sharing the lessons learned with my co-workers, and I am proud to see the changes happening as a result."

Another sang praises to the instructors; "Their in-depth knowledge of the course materials and of Food Service helped to make the course relevant and understandable. This made it easier for the students to be fully involved throughout the entire training."

Yet another student stated, "The education received will remain with me for a lifetime, and has motivated me to help educate others in safe food handling practices. I am truly grateful to have been a part of this and I commend CI for offering industry leading education to the inmate population."

Correctional Industries is in the process of certifying instructors at AHCC, CRCC, WSP, and MCC and will be offering ServSafe® Food Manager Certification to workers at these facilities in the near future.
