| The DOC Re-entry Initiative |
| Washington's Re-entry Initiative is a cornerstone of the Department of Corrections' effort to improve public safety. The initiative protects citizens by providing offenders with programs that reduce the likelihood they will commit new crimes after release from prison, jail, or community supervision. About 97 percent of incarcerated offenders will one day complete their sentences and be released to the community. Without successful efforts to resolve their individual deficits, many will return to lives of crime. The goal of the Re-entry Initiative is to prevent that from happening. |
| Correctional Industries: An Effective Re-entry Program |
| Correctional Industries, in conjunction with the Department's Vocational Education program and Washington's Employment Security Department, is connecting skilled workers with private industry. Living wage jobs are necessary for a successful transition into the community and CI is helping offenders make the final transition to employment. |
 |
Utilizing Correctional Industries as a foundation for skills development, offenders have the opportunity to earn industry-accredited skill certifications that can be used to assist them in obtaining meaningful employment upon release. Offenders trained through CI will not only have money to help them |
| survive once they are released, they will also have skills to assist them in finding a job, learn valuable life skills such as pride in accomplishment, an understanding of quality, and proper work ethics. |
Many offenders want to change — and can change with the right support. As citizens of the state of Washington, we are all affected by offender re-entry. Formerly incarcerated individuals shop in grocery stores, have children who attend schools, and spouses who work with us every day. With an understanding of what offender re-entry is all about, and a desire to make a difference, we can all help make the
re-entry process an opportunity for positive change in our state. |
